Hamburg - the city on the River Elbe
With a population of nearly 1.8 million, the northern German city of Hamburg is not only the second largest city in Germany, but also the third largest harbour in Europe. Located directly on the River Elbe, its proximity to the North Sea makes the Hanseatic city, also known as the ‘Gateway to the World’, an important business location.
Tourism and culture
The harbour, unique sights, a wealth of cultural offerings (the Hanseatic city has more than 60 theatres and 60 museums as well as musicals, operas and concert houses) and the cityscape, shaped by canals and the Alster tributary, make Hamburg an attractive destination for tourists from both Germany and abroad. More than four million visitors stay in the Elbe metropolis each year. With its international airport, four ICE train stations and various shipping lines, Hamburg offers outstanding transport connections, making it easy to reach interesting German and European destinations.
